The State Intercollegiate Center (SIC) "Orion" is budgetary organization, separate scientific subdivision in composition the Donbass State Technical University (DonSTU). Center was founded in 1993. Denishchik Yuri Sergeevich was the fist director - Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor, Academician of the International Academy of Sciences of Ecology and Safety of Vital Functions, member of the International Astronomic Union.

A center has a long-term experience of lead through of scientific researches and implementation of developments in area of radiophysics, quantum electronics, laser technique, electronics. Most attention is spared to laser ranging of space objects, and also – to technologies of GPS and geoinformation system.

On proposal of SIC «Orion» and under his guidance the network of the Laser Ranging Stations (LRS) of Department of education and science of Ukraine was created with points in astronomic observatories Lvov and Uzhgorod National Universities, and also in the Astronomic observatory of SIC «Orion» of DonSTU. LRS can determine the coordinates of space satellites with centimeter exactness from distance in ten of thousands of kilometers. It enables to decide the tasks of space navigation and satellite geodesy. SIC «Orion» created the GPS-station which is incorporated in the European network of the permanent GPS-stations also. The network of such stations allows considerably to promote exactness of determination of co-ordinates of stationary and mobile objects on territory of Ukraine.

Astronomic observatory of SIC «Orion» is the strong point of new fundamental geodesic network on east of Ukraine. An observatory is an unique scientific complex for implementation of fundamental and applied researches on astronomy, geophysics, geodesy, space navigation, quantum electronics and radiophysics. By the order of Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine № 73-р of February, 11, 2004 to the astronomic observatory of SIC «Orion» of DMMI was appropriated status of «National Heritage of Ukraine» as to the object under the name «Alchevsk Scientific Laser Station (ANLAS)».

SIC «Orion» co-operates with the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine by agreement about a collaboration in area of laser локации of space objects. A center has close connections with Institute of the applied optics NASU.

International connections of SIC «Orion» supports with Institute of Astronomy of the Latvian University, with the State research center «The Troitsk Institute of Innovative Technologies and Thermonuclear Researches» in Russian Federation. «Orion» is a collective member of International Society of Optical Technique of «SPIE» (USA). SIC «Orion» is incorporated in European Space Informative Service (Munich), with the International Astronomic Union (Paris), with Braunsk University and Institute of Business-Collaboration (USA) and with Goddarsk Center of Space Flights of NASA (USA).

Alchevsk the scientific laser station is a waterside of storage pool “Isakovskoe”, in an out-of-town area in the distance a 12 km from the city Alchevsk (We on the map).

There are two buildings on territory of observatory. It is a pavilion for the geodesic laser ranging station with a movable roof and building, where GPS–station and official apartments is located.
